Colonoscopy HalfLytely Prep Instructions

CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY: Ensure we are a participating provider, that your procedure is covered, and what your out of pocket cost will be. You may be required to get pre-certification and/or pre-authorization. Be sure to ask about any fees charged by the facility and anesthesiologist.  Procedure codes range is CPT45378 through 45385, G0105 and G0121.

NO DRIVING: You cannot drive, use a taxi, or a bus after the procedure. You must be accompanied by an adult during your entire stay. If you fail to do so, the hospital may cancel your appointment. If unable to care for yourself, you may need someone to assist you for 24 hours after the procedure.

PURCHASE FROM PHARMACY (at least two days before exam), one HalfLytely Bowel Prep Kit. A prescription is needed.


  1. Stop taking all aspirin/aspirin-like products, Ibuprofen/Ibuprofen-like products, Glucosamine, fish oil, iron and supplements containing iron, at least 5 days before the test. You may take Tylenol if necessary.
  2. Stop taking blood thinners (Coumadin, Plavix, etc.).


  1. The morning of the day before your procedure, add lukewarm water to the top of the line on the HALFLYTELY bottle. Add a flavor pack, shake to dissolve the powder and place bottle in the refrigerator.
  2. On this day you may have a light breakfast before 8:00 am. Then, begin a clear liquid diet, which includes black coffee or tea, clear fruit juices (apple or white grape), broth or bouillon, jello, popsicles, and pop. Do not drink any liquids that contain red coloring.
  3. At 3:00 pm: Swallow the 2 Bisacodyl tablets that are included in your prep kit with an 8- ounce glass of water. Do not chew or crush.
  4. From 5:00 to 7:00 pm: begin to drink the HalfLytely solution. Drink one 8-ounce glass every 10-15 minutes until the solution is gone. The solution should be consumed within 2 hours and you may drink with a straw. Continue drinking clear fluids until bedtime.


  1. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. However, if you take any other medication, you may take it on the morning of the procedure, 3 hours before test, with a small amount of water. Call the office if you have any questions about the medication instructions.
  2. If diabetic, do not take your morning dose of insulin or your oral diabetic medications.
  3. Bring a current list of your prescribed medications – include the name and dosage of each one – along with a list of any known drug allergies.
  4. Bring all current insurance cards, and a photo identification or valid driverʼs license.

Please provide 72 business hours notice to avoid a late cancellation fee of $75.
